BLACK HISTORY MONTH OF COURSE

Day 3 Prompt – BLACK HISTORY MONTH OF COURSE

It’s Black History Month all month long. February is the shortest month of the year, and we know this. But, the month was chosen, not for its small size, but because it contains the birthdays of President Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass. Besides, there are many days all over the calendar to celebrate Black History, so no need to confine such a good thing to just one month.

This month is packed with all sorts of wonderful things: There’s Valentine’s Day, the Groundhog (but Punxsutawny Phil let me down) and sometimes, a little snow. Then, of course, it’s Black History Month. Most of us can’t make it through the day without encountering Black History that enhances our lives. And since it is #NaHaiWriMo, this may be a worthy topic for our first week of daily #haiku.

Black History is more than peaceful, nonviolent protests about social justice. There is a rich cultural history encompassing food, fashion, faith and so much more. From the Arts to Business, Industry to Politics, Science to Sports and beyond, Black, or African American people have made significant contributions that deserve to be celebrated.

Did you know? When you reach for a snack that contains peanut butter, keep in mind, a black person invented that. When the drive-thru bank teller processes your financial transaction, the technology that carries your cash or checks into the bank and back to your vehicle, keep in mind, a black person invented that. When you use GPS technology to find the fastest route to your next destination, keep in mind, a black person invented that, too, and that black person was a woman! These are just 3 examples.

What aspect of Black History inspires you? Can you fit that into 17 syllables?
